Player Evaluation for 2025 Spring Season

We’re excited to kick off player evaluations for Farms 89ers, Minors, and Majors in Baseball and Softball! Evaluations are a key part of our team placement process, and every player who attends will be placed on a team. Please note, no players are "cut," regardless of the outcome.

Important: Before your child can participate in player evaluations, they MUST be registered with Granite Falls Little League.

To ensure your player is comfortable during evaluations, please dress them warmly and in layers. Numbers will be provided and should be safety-pinned to the back of their outer layer of clothing.

Please bring your child's player equipment (glove, helmet, bat) for all evaluations. If you don't have equipment, we will have gear available for use during the evaluations. Additionally, we will be hosting a rummage sale of used equipment, giving you the opportunity to purchase affordable items.

Player Tip:
For better visibility, especially if your child is wearing a sweatshirt, we recommend pinning their number lower on their back to prevent it from being covered by their hood.

Players who do not attend an evaluation session will become a hat pick in the draft for the Farm 89ers, Minors and Majors Divisions

Question: What is the format?

Answer: When assessing young players, it’s essential to focus on key skills that highlight their potential for growth and success on the field. Our evaluators will carefully consider these fundamental abilities to determine each player's strengths and areas for development.
  • Skill: Evaluate a player’s defensive fundamentals by observing their movement to the ball, footwork, fielding technique, and throwing accuracy and strength. Consider how well they field grounders and fly balls, their hand positioning, and their ability to quickly transfer the ball to their throwing hand.
  • Skill: Assess offensive potential by looking beyond bat contact. Consider the player's body language and positioning in the batter’s box, their ability to track the ball, stay in the box, and swing confidently. These traits suggest the potential to develop strong hitting skills.
  • Skill: Speed is a critical asset that can’t be taught but can impact the game significantly. Evaluate a player’s reaction time during base-running or defensive drills, as quick reflexes and speed, especially in younger players, indicate future potential with proper coaching.
